The Format Override That Makes AI Output Twice as Fast to Read

The default AI response is padded. It restates your question. It walks you through how it is going to think about the answer. It gives the actual answer. Then it summarises what it just said. Then it asks if you want it to go deeper. By the time you have the information you needed, you have read three hundred words of filler. The fix is one line at the end of your prompt.

The format override

End any prompt with this template:

Output format: [exactly what you want]. No preamble. No summary.

That is the entire intervention. One line. Cuts the padding by 60 percent. Makes every AI output twice as fast to read.

Why it works

The model is trained to deliver a "complete answer experience," which has been operationalised as: acknowledge the question, structure the thinking, deliver the answer, wrap up nicely. The override tells the model that the actual answer is the only thing that matters. The model is fully capable of producing tight, structured output. It just does not default to it because most users have learned to skim past the filler.

When to use it

Use it on any output where you know the shape of what you want. Lists, tables, comparisons, drafts that need to fit a specific structure, anything where the format is part of the spec. Skip it on exploratory queries where the model's structure may surface things you would have missed.

Three sharper variations

For lists: "Output: 5 bullets max, no headers, no intro, no closing. Each bullet under 12 words."

For comparisons: "Output as table. Columns: [list]. Rows: [list]. No preamble. No notes. Just the table."

For drafts: "Output: the message only, ready to send. No options, no commentary, no alternatives."

Before and after

Without the override, asked to compare three vendors: "Comparing the three vendors you mentioned is an important step in your selection process. Let me walk through each one systematically. First, Vendor A offers a comprehensive solution with several key features..." (continues for 800 words).

With the override ("Output as 3 column table. Columns: Vendor, Strongest feature, Biggest weakness. No preamble."): A 3 column table, 50 words total, ready to paste into your decision document.

Same prompt. Same model. One extra line. The second output is what you actually wanted.

The deeper version

The full pattern for an AI that produces format compliant output by default is to put your standard formats into your workspace context so you never have to specify them again. For the protocol to set this up properly, follow The First Saturday.

The reframe

You read AI output slowly because the AI is padding it. The padding is not the model's fault. It is the default mode you have not yet overridden. One line at the end of every prompt is the cheapest reading speed upgrade you will ever get. The Layer 2 version, where the format defaults are loaded into the workspace, is what makes the upgrade permanent.
