American Airlines flight delay compensation: what you get and how to claim

American Airlines flight delay compensation: what you get and how to claim

There is no cash American Airlines flight delay compensation on flights inside the US, because no US law requires it and American makes no such promise on the Department of Transportation's dashboard. What you do get is a meal voucher after a 3-hour wait, a hotel if the delay runs overnight, and a full refund if the delay is long enough and you decide not to fly. If your American flight left from the EU or the UK and arrived 3 or more hours late, you can claim up to €600 or £520 in cash.

Below is exactly what applies to your flight, how to work out the amount, and the message to send.

American Airlines flight delay compensation: what it owes you

Three sets of rules can apply, and which one you use depends on where the flight started and what caused the delay.

  • American's own commitments. For delays American caused (crew, maintenance, cleaning, baggage loading, fueling), its customer service plan promises a food credit once you have waited 3 hours past scheduled departure, a hotel for an overnight delay away from home, transport to and from that hotel, and rebooking on its next flight or on a partner airline.
  • US federal refund rules. These apply to every flight to, from or within the US, whatever caused the delay.
  • EU261 and UK261. These give fixed cash amounts, but only on American flights that depart from an EU or UK airport.

Table showing what American Airlines owes by delay: meal voucher after 3 hours, hotel for overnight delay, refund for 3 hour domestic or 6 hour international delay, bag fee refund, EU261 and UK261 cash amounts, no cash for US flights

Weather changes the picture. If the delay was outside American's control, such as a storm or an air traffic control order, the customer service plan says you cover your own meals and hotel. You keep the right to a refund if you turn down the new flight.

Does American Airlines pay cash for delays?

Not on a US flight. The DOT's cancellation and delay dashboard lists what each large US airline commits to. For American, the boxes for cash, travel credits and miles after a controllable delay are all empty.

There was a plan to change this. In December 2024 the DOT opened a rulemaking on cash compensation for long delays. It was withdrawn on 17 November 2025, and the Federal Register notice says airlines already offer comparable protections on a voluntary basis. So there is no cash rule for US delays, and none is pending.

American can still offer a goodwill gesture, such as a trip credit or miles, if you ask. That is at its discretion. Ask for it in writing, but do not count on it.

When a delay gets you a full refund

The DOT rule on airline refunds is the strongest US protection you have. It covers delays for any reason, weather included.

Situation What the rule says
Domestic flight Departs 3+ hours early or arrives 3+ hours late: significant change, refund due if you decline
International flight Departs 6+ hours early or arrives 6+ hours late: refund due if you decline
Other changes New departure or arrival airport, extra connection, or a downgrade also count
Paid by card Refund within 7 business days
Paid another way Refund within 20 calendar days
Checked bag late Bag fee refunded if the bag arrives more than 12 hours after a domestic landing (15 or 30 hours on international flights, by flight length)

The catch: if you accept the rebooking or fly on the delayed flight, the refund right is gone. Decide before you board. The refund must be in the original form of payment. A travel credit is only allowed if you agree to it.

American Airlines flights from Europe or the UK

This is the only case where American owes you cash. The EU rules cover every flight that departs an EU airport, whatever the airline, according to the EU's Your Europe guide. They also cover flights into the EU, but only on EU airlines. American is a US airline, so its flights from the US to Europe are not covered. Its flights from Europe to the US are.

Flight distance EU261 (from EU) UK261 (from UK)
Up to 1,500 km €250 £220
1,500 to 3,500 km €400 £350
Over 3,500 km, 3 to 4 hours late €300 if re-routed, otherwise €600 £260
Over 3,500 km, 4+ hours late €600 £520

The UK amounts come from the Civil Aviation Authority. The EU halving for long flights applies when the airline re-routes you and you land between 3 and 4 hours late. Every American transatlantic flight is well over 3,500 km, so the €600 or £520 band is the one that usually applies.

Two conditions. The delay is measured at arrival, and it has to be 3 hours or more. The airline also escapes paying if it proves "extraordinary circumstances", such as severe weather or an air traffic control decision. A technical fault is generally not one of those.

The EU agreed a reform of these rules in June 2026, but the European Parliament's tracker shows it still needs formal adoption. Until it is published and in force, the current amounts above apply.

Worked examples with real numbers

These are examples to show the arithmetic, not real claims.

Example 1: Madrid to Dallas, 5 hours late, crew shortage

  • Departs the EU, so EU261 applies.
  • Distance is over 3,500 km and the arrival delay is over 4 hours, so €600 per passenger.
  • A family of three: 3 × €600 = €1,800.
  • Crew shortage is within the airline's control, so the extraordinary circumstances defence should not apply.

Example 2: Chicago to Miami, 4 hours late, maintenance

  • US domestic flight, so there is no cash compensation.
  • Wait of 3+ hours for a controllable delay: meal voucher.
  • Arrival 4 hours late is a significant change (3+ hours domestic). If you had turned down the flight, a $320 ticket would come back as a $320 refund within 7 business days on a card.
  • If you flew anyway, the refund is gone. Ask for a goodwill credit instead.

Example 3: London to New York, 3 hours 20 minutes late, rebooked

  • Departs the UK, so UK261 applies.
  • Over 3,500 km, delay between 3 and 4 hours: £260 per passenger.
  • Two passengers: 2 × £260 = £520.

American vs United and other US airlines

People also search for United flight delay compensation, so here is how the big US airlines compare on the DOT dashboard for controllable delays. None of them commits to cash.

How to claim from American Airlines, step by step

At the airport

  • Ask the gate agent for the cause of the delay and note the exact words. "Maintenance" and "crew" are controllable. "Weather" and "ATC" are not.
  • Screenshot the app showing the new times.
  • After 3 hours, ask for the meal voucher. If it is overnight, ask for the hotel and transport vouchers before you leave the gate.
  • If you want a refund, do not board and do not accept the rebooking.
  • Keep every receipt. If vouchers were not available, American's plan says it reimburses reasonable costs.

After the flight

  1. Work out which rule applies: US refund, EU261 or UK261.
  2. Send the claim to American through its customer relations or refunds channel on aa.com, with your record locator, flight number, date and receipts.
  3. Give a clear deadline, such as 14 days.
  4. If American says no or goes quiet, escalate. For US rules, file a DOT complaint. For EU flights, go to the national enforcement body in the departure country. For UK flights, use the CAA's guidance.
  5. If a refund is owed and not paid, ask your card issuer. Our guide to chargebacks and Section 75 claims covers how that works.

Please pay to [method] within 14 days. If you believe extraordinary circumstances apply, please send the evidence.

For a US domestic flight, swap the middle paragraph for: "I declined the rebooking. Under the DOT refund rule, please refund [amount] to my original card within 7 business days."

If your delay was on a European airline instead, our guide to flight delay compensation after 3 hours covers the same rules from the airline side. The same approach of evidence, a deadline and then escalation also works for things like getting charges back from a gym that won't let you cancel.

FAQ

How much does American Airlines pay for a 3-hour delay?

On a US flight, nothing in cash. American commits to a meal voucher once you have waited 3 hours for a delay it caused, and a hotel if the delay runs overnight. If the flight left from the EU or UK and landed 3 or more hours late, you can claim €250 to €600 or £220 to £520 per passenger, depending on distance.

Can I get a refund if my American Airlines flight is delayed?

Yes, if the delay counts as significant and you choose not to travel. Under the DOT rule that means arriving 3 or more hours late on a domestic flight or 6 or more hours late on an international one. If you paid by card, the refund is due within 7 business days. If you fly or accept the rebooking, you lose the refund right.

Does American Airlines give miles for delays?

Not as a commitment. The DOT dashboard shows American does not promise cash, travel credits or miles for controllable delays. Some passengers get a goodwill credit or miles after asking customer relations, but that is at American's discretion. Ask in writing with your booking details and keep the reply.

Does EU261 apply to American Airlines?

Only on flights that depart from an EU airport. EU261 covers any airline leaving the EU but only EU airlines flying into it, and American is a US airline. So a Paris to Dallas flight is covered and a Dallas to Paris flight is not. UK departures are covered the same way under UK261.

Is United flight delay compensation any different?

Not much. On the DOT dashboard United, like American and Delta, commits to meals after 3 hours, a hotel for overnight delays and rebooking on other airlines, with no cash, credit or miles. The refund rule and EU261 or UK261 apply to United in the same way. Alaska, JetBlue and Southwest do list travel credits for 3-hour delays.
