Best SEO app for Shopify: 7 compared, and what you get free

Best SEO app for Shopify: 7 compared, and what you get free

For most small stores, the best SEO app for Shopify is one all-in-one app on its free plan, and nothing else. Shopify already builds your sitemap and robots.txt and lets you edit every title tag, meta description and alt text by hand, so an app earns its place by doing that work in bulk. Below, seven popular Shopify SEO apps compared on price and features, what each one is best for, and how to pick one without stacking apps that do the same job.

What Shopify does for SEO without an app

Most "best SEO app" lists skip this part, and it decides if you need an app at all. Before you install anything, here is what your store already does:

  • Sitemap. Shopify's help center says every store generates a sitemap.xml automatically, and it updates when you add a product, collection, page, image or blog post. You do not need an app to build or refresh it.
  • Robots.txt. Shopify gives every store a default robots.txt and says it works for most stores. Editing it is possible, but Shopify warns that a mistake can cost you all your search traffic.
  • Title tags, meta descriptions and alt text. You can edit these for every product, collection, page and blog post. Shopify suggests keeping titles to about 60 characters and meta descriptions to about 160.
  • Redirects. You can add URL redirects one at a time or import them from a CSV file.

What Shopify does not give you is speed at scale. Writing 400 meta descriptions one product at a time is where an app pays for itself. So is finding the broken links and missing alt text you did not know about.

Table comparing what Shopify does for SEO for free with what an SEO app adds: sitemap and robots.txt are built in, titles, alt text and redirects can be edited by hand, while site-wide audits and broken link scans need an app

If your store has fewer than about 50 products and you are willing to spend an afternoon, you can do the basics by hand with our Shopify SEO checklist. That number is our rule of thumb, not a Shopify limit. Past it, an app saves real hours.

Best SEO app for Shopify: the seven compared

Prices, plans and ratings below are taken from each app's Shopify App Store listing on October 5, 2026. They change often, so check the listing before you install. No app paid to be on this list, and we have not tested them on a live store; this is a comparison of what each one offers and charges.

App Free plan Paid from Rating (reviews) Best for
SEOLab Yes Listed as free 4.9 (2,769) Zero budget, all-in-one
Smart SEO Yes $14.99/mo 5.0 (954) Cheap bulk meta and alt text
TinySEO Yes, 50 optimizations $14/mo 5.0 (2,527) Image-heavy stores
StoreSEO Yes, 25 products $14.99/mo 5.0 (754) Small catalogs that want AI help
Booster SEO Yes $39/mo 4.8 (5,486) Hands-off, automatic fixes
Avada SEO Yes $34.95/mo 4.9 (4,682) Speed and images together
JSON-LD for SEO No, 7-day trial $399/yr 4.9 (442) Structured data only, done well

Star ratings on the App Store cluster between 4.8 and 5.0, so they do not separate these apps much. Pricing and what each plan includes tell you more.

The seven apps, one by one

1. SEOLab: the best free SEO app for Shopify

The SEOLab listing describes a fully working free tier covering meta tags, JSON-LD structured data, bulk alt text, broken link detection with bulk redirects, speed checks and a Search Console connection. If you want one app and do not want to pay, start here. Watch for features you will not use, since an all-in-one app can add more than you need.

2. Smart SEO: cheap bulk meta tags and alt text

Smart SEO's free plan includes 20 AI generations, meta and alt tag optimization and a broken link check on 100 pages. Pro costs $14.99 a month ($149.90 a year) and adds JSON-LD, IndexNow and bulk optimization. It is a sensible pick if bulk meta tags are the main job.

3. TinySEO: for stores with lots of images

TinySEO (formerly TinyIMG) is priced by image optimizations: 50 a month free, then $14, $23 or $49 a month for 1,500, 5,000 or 15,000. It also covers alt text, JSON-LD, broken links with 301 redirects and IndexNow. Choose it if heavy product photos are slowing your pages.

4. StoreSEO: small catalogs that want AI help

StoreSEO's free plan covers 25 products. Lite is $14.99 a month for 100 products, Essential $39.99 for 250 and Advanced $249.99 for 10,000. Pricing scales with catalog size, so it suits small stores and gets expensive fast for large ones.

5. Booster SEO: the hands-off option

Booster's free plan covers alt text, broken link reports and manual audits. Meta tag templates, automatic fixes and structured data start on Pro at $39 a month or $349 a year. Premium, at $69 a month, adds image compression and Search Console data. Pick it if you want the app to fix things without you checking each one.

6. Avada SEO: speed and images in one app

Avada's free plan includes 100 image optimizations, a basic speed booster, meta tags and 20 audits. Pro is $34.95 a month ($348 a year) for unlimited image optimization, unlimited audits and a broken link manager. It overlaps with TinySEO, so you need one or the other, not both.

7. JSON-LD for SEO: structured data and nothing else

This is a specialist app at $399 a year. It adds product, review, breadcrumb, FAQ and video structured data and works with more than 20 review apps. It does not edit meta tags or compress images. Worth it when your products have reviews and you want them to show as rich results. Google says rich results are shown at its discretion, so no app can promise stars in search.

Which Shopify SEO tools do you actually need?

Pick one tool per job. The most common mistake is two apps doing the same job, which wastes money and can cause conflicts. Two apps that both add product structured data can put two sets of product markup on the same page. Use this checklist:

  • [ ] Bulk titles, meta descriptions and alt text: one all-in-one app (SEOLab, Smart SEO, StoreSEO or Booster).
  • [ ] Image compression: only if your all-in-one app does not do it. TinySEO or Avada, not both.
  • [ ] Structured data: check what your theme already outputs before adding any. Paste a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test. If it already finds a valid Product item, you may not need more.
  • [ ] Redirects: Shopify's own redirects and CSV import cover most stores.
  • [ ] Speed: run a product page through PageSpeed Insights before and a week after installing any app that adds scripts to your storefront.

Alt text is worth doing well, not just doing. Google says it uses alt text to understand images, and warns that stuffing it with keywords can make a site look like spam. Check a sample of AI-written alt text before you approve it in bulk. Our free SEO meta tag checker is a quick way to see what a page sends to Google.

Worked example: what an app stack costs in a year

Here is an example of two stores with the same goal, using list prices from the App Store on October 5, 2026.

Store A: three apps, billed monthly Cost per year
Booster SEO Pro: $39 × 12 $468.00
TinySEO Beginner: $14 × 12 $168.00
JSON-LD for SEO $399.00
Total $1,035.00

Store B uses one app, Smart SEO Pro, billed yearly at $149.90. The difference is $1,035.00 − $149.90 = $885.10 a year. Store A gets more, such as automatic fixes and specialist structured data, but much of it overlaps. Booster Pro already adds structured data, and Store A pays for it twice.

Billing yearly also matters. Booster Pro yearly is $349, against $468 monthly, which saves $119. Smart SEO Pro yearly is $149.90, against $14.99 × 12 = $179.88, which saves $29.98. Only switch to yearly once you are sure you will keep the app.

How to remove an SEO app without leaving a mess

Uninstalling is not always clean. Shopify's help center says some apps add code to your theme that is not removed when you uninstall, and some store data you cannot get back afterwards. Before you remove an SEO app:

  1. Export anything you need: redirect lists, keyword reports, audit history.
  2. Check whether the app changed your meta tags directly or just displays them. Edits written into Shopify usually stay after uninstall; tags the app injects on the fly disappear.
  3. Read the app listing or ask the developer for removal steps, then turn off its app embed in your theme editor.
  4. Uninstall. Shopify says this cancels future charges, though you may still be billed for the current cycle.
  5. Run the Rich Results Test and PageSpeed Insights again to confirm nothing broke.

FAQ

Does Shopify have SEO built in?

Yes. Every Shopify store generates a sitemap.xml that updates itself and has a default robots.txt that Shopify says works for most stores. You can edit the title tag, meta description and URL of every product, collection, page and blog post, add alt text to images and create redirects. An SEO app mostly speeds up this work across many pages.

What is the best free SEO app for Shopify?

Of the seven apps here, SEOLab has the most complete free plan: its App Store listing describes a fully working free tier with meta tags, structured data, bulk alt text and broken link fixes. Smart SEO, Booster, Avada and StoreSEO also have free plans, but they cap usage or keep key features, such as meta tag templates, for paid plans.

Do I need more than one SEO app on Shopify?

Usually not. One all-in-one app covers meta tags, alt text, broken links and basic structured data. Add a second app only for a job the first one does not do, such as heavy image compression. Two apps doing the same job cost more and can clash, for example by adding duplicate product structured data to the same page.

Do SEO apps slow down a Shopify store?

They can. Apps that edit data inside Shopify, such as meta descriptions, add nothing to your pages. Apps that inject scripts or markup into your storefront add page weight. Test a product page in PageSpeed Insights before you install an app and again a week later, and remove any app whose cost in speed outweighs what it does.

Will an SEO app get my products star ratings in Google?

No app can promise that. Product structured data makes a page eligible to show price, availability and review ratings, but Google says these enhancements are shown at its discretion and may change. Check your markup with Google's Rich Results Test, and make sure the reviews it marks up are real and visible on the page.
