Subject: Rent increase Hi, I got your message about the rent going up. I think it is too much and I cannot really afford it. Could you please lower it? I have been a good tenant and I hope we can work something out. Thanks
No numbers, no proof, no clear ask and no date, so it is easy to ignore or refuse.
Subject: Rent at 2140 N Leavitt St, Apt 3B from 1 July: proposal Dear Ms Alvarez, Thank you for the renewal offer of 15 April. I would like to stay. I have lived in 3B for three years and paid on time every month. Five similar two-bed apartments nearby are listed between $1,800 and $1,950, with a middle price of $1,875. I would like to propose renewing at $1,875 a month from 1 July, and I am happy to sign for 24 months, which saves you an empty period. Could you let me know by 29 April? Kind regards, Jordan Pike

- Trading terms, like a longer lease, often works better than asking only for a lower number.
- It will never tell you to stop paying rent to win an argument.
- It writes, you send. Nothing goes out for you.
- Part of the Renter's Kit: 3 packs for $29.
- Or get Every Problem Pack: all 50 for $99.
