A Shopify fee calculator adds up the four things you pay each month: the plan, card processing, any third-party transaction fee and currency conversion. On the Basic plan with Shopify Payments, $10,000 of sales across 200 orders on standard US cards costs $389 a month all in, and Grow only becomes the cheaper plan once your sales pass $33,000 a month. Enter your own sales below and the calculator compares Basic, Grow and Advanced side by side.

How to use the Shopify fee calculator
- Enter your online sales per month and orders per month. Use last month's figures from your Shopify analytics, or your plan for next month.
- Pick monthly or yearly billing. Yearly billing cuts every plan price by about a quarter.
- Pick Shopify Payments or another payment provider. With Shopify Payments, set your card mix. With another provider, enter its rate.
- Read the Total row. The cheapest plan is shaded, and the lines below the table show the sales level where each upgrade starts to pay for itself.
If you are not sure of your card mix, leave the example values in. Your payouts report in Shopify shows the fee on each order if you want to check it.
How it works: Shopify fees and the formulas
These are the US online rates the calculator uses, taken from Shopify's pricing page on October 7, 2026. Rates differ by country and change from time to time, so check yours before you decide.
| Per month or per sale | Basic | Grow | Advanced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan, billed monthly | $39 | $105 | $399 |
| Plan, billed yearly (per month) | $29 | $79 | $299 |
| Standard online card rate | 2.9% + 30¢ | 2.7% + 30¢ | 2.5% + 30¢ |
| Premium online card rate | 3.5% + 30¢ | 3.3% + 30¢ | 3.1% + 30¢ |
| International cards | +1% | +1% | +1% |
| Third-party transaction fee | 2% | 1% | 0.6% |
Shopify says third-party transaction fees apply only when you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments. Currency conversion is separate: Shopify's help center lists a 1.5% conversion fee for US stores and 2% in most other countries, charged when a customer pays in a currency other than your payout currency.
With S as monthly sales, N as orders, p as the premium card share, i as the international share and c as the share paid in another currency:
- Card rate (Shopify Payments): standard rate × (1 − p) + premium rate × p + 1% × i
- Card processing: S × card rate + N × $0.30
- Currency conversion: S × c × conversion fee
- With another provider: S × provider rate + N × provider fixed fee, plus S × Shopify's transaction fee for your plan
- Total: plan price + processing + transaction fee + conversion
- Upgrade break-even: (higher plan price − lower plan price) ÷ (lower plan's rate − higher plan's rate)
The fixed 30¢ fee is the same on every plan, so it cancels out of the break-even sum. The calculator assumes premium and international shares are spread evenly across your sales.

Worked example: $10,000 a month on Shopify Payments
This is an example store, using the default values: $10,000 of sales from 200 orders, billed monthly. 15% of sales are on premium cards, 10% on international cards, and 5% are paid in another currency.
- Basic card rate: 2.9% × 0.85 + 3.5% × 0.15 + 1% × 0.10 = 2.465% + 0.525% + 0.1% = 3.09%
- Processing: $10,000 × 3.09% + 200 × $0.30 = $309 + $60 = $369.00
- Currency conversion: $10,000 × 5% × 1.5% = $7.50
- Basic total: $39 + $369 + $7.50 = $415.50, or 4.16% of sales
- Grow total: $105 + ($289 + $60) + $7.50 = $461.50
- Advanced total: $399 + ($269 + $60) + $7.50 = $735.50
Basic wins by $46 a month. Grow's card rates are 0.2 points lower at every level, so Grow catches up when 0.2% of sales covers the $66 price gap: $66 ÷ 0.002 = $33,000 a month. On yearly billing the gap is $50, so the break-even falls to $25,000.
Now switch the same store to another provider charging 2.9% + 30¢. Basic adds a 2% Shopify transaction fee, $200 a month, for a total of $589. Grow adds only 1%, so it totals $555 and becomes the cheaper plan. With another provider, Grow overtakes Basic at just $66 ÷ 0.01 = $6,600 a month in sales.
Which Shopify plan is cheapest, and what to do next
For most small stores on Shopify Payments, Basic is the cheapest plan on fees until sales pass about $33,000 a month. Upgrade earlier only for a feature you need, such as more staff accounts. Three checks to do next:
- Fees are only part of the cost. Our Shopify profit margin calculator adds product cost, shipping, refunds and ads to see what you keep per order.
- Price with fees in mind. The markup calculator shows the list price that keeps your margin after card fees.
- Bigger orders dilute the 30¢. On a $20 order the fixed fee is 1.5% of the sale; on a $100 order it is 0.3%. The AOV calculator shows what raising order value is worth.
If you run ads, check your break-even ROAS with the fee rate from this tool included, or every campaign will look more profitable than it is.

FAQ
How much does Shopify take per sale?
On the Basic plan with Shopify Payments, a standard US card sale online costs 2.9% plus 30 cents. A $50 order pays $1.45 + $0.30 = $1.75. Premium cards cost 3.5% plus 30 cents, and international cards add 1%. Grow and Advanced have lower rates. Shopify takes no extra transaction fee when you use Shopify Payments.
What are Shopify transaction fees?
They are a separate charge, on top of your provider's own fee, when you take payments through a provider other than Shopify Payments. The fee is 2% of each sale on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced. On $10,000 of monthly sales, that is $200, $100 or $60 a month before your provider's charges.
When should I upgrade from Basic to Grow?
On Shopify Payments, Grow's card rates are 0.2 points lower, so it saves money on fees once monthly sales pass $33,000 on monthly billing, or $25,000 on yearly billing. With another provider, the transaction fee drops from 2% to 1% and Grow pays off at $6,600 a month. Upgrade sooner only if you need Grow's features.
Is yearly billing on Shopify worth it?
If you plan to stay a year, yes. Shopify's pricing page lists Basic at $29 a month billed yearly against $39 monthly, Grow at $79 against $105, and Advanced at $299 against $399. On Basic that saves $120 over a year. The catch is that you commit up front, so start monthly while you test.
Does Shopify charge a currency conversion fee?
Yes, when a customer pays in a currency other than your payout currency through Shopify Payments. Shopify's help center lists 1.5% for US stores and 2% in most other countries. If 5% of $10,000 in sales is converted, the fee is $500 × 1.5% = $7.50. If you sell only in your own currency, it does not apply.
